Nut Allergies and Why is it such a Big Deal?

If you are a Malaysian, then you're more than likely to not be allergic to nuts. However, in an article in New Straits Times, Dr Sanjay stated that during the past few years, there has been a rising cases on nut allergies among children in Malaysia.

Allergic reactions can range from mild to even life-threatening symptoms depending on the person. For some, the symptoms can happen immediately after eating (in a few minutes) while for others, symptoms can appear later (hours to even days).

So since there's a known prevalence of nut allergies as of late, it's best that we list down possible symptoms that we should look out for:

Image shows a child with swollen lips and red bumps and hives all over their body and cheeks. There is a black bar covering the child's eyes

    • Hives (raised red bumps on the skin) and rashes
    • Runny nose, blocked nose, and swollen red eyes
    • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or cramping, and diarrhea.
    • Sneezing, trouble with breathing, strained voice, and difficulties to swallow.

If you, your friends or family members ever experience any of these symptoms, make sure to seek medical assistance as fast as you can.

Allergy is a serious matter as it can cause various complications and may even lead to death. That's where food manufacturers play an important role to make sure consumers that are susceptible to these are made aware through allergen declaration on packaging and also shoulder the responsibility in preventing cross-contamination during preparations.
